Brooklyn Bridge
At the time of its completion in 1883, the Brooklyn Bridge was the longest suspension bridge in the world. Today, pedestrians can enjoy a stroll across the bridge connecting the New York City boroughs of Manhattan and Brooklyn. Take a walk during sunrise and sunset for the spectacular view of the city’s skyline.
Battery Park
On the southern tip of Manhattan, the nearly 25 acres of Battery Park provide a refreshing sanctuary from the bustling streets of the city. With gardens, fields, plazas and walkways, there is so much to see and do in the park. Its beautiful waterfront makes it a lovely place to wander. In addition, the area offers great views of New Jersey.
Ground Zero
This remains one of the city’s most popular attractions. Visitors from around the world come here to honor the thousands of victims and survivors of the September 11th attacks. Next to the site, at St. Paul’s Chapel, an interactive exhibit with photos, cards, and drawings serve as a shrine to remember the rescue workers. Hotel 91 is a convenient twenty-minute walk to Ground Zero.
Statue of Liberty/Ellis Island
Located on a 12 acre island, the Statue of Liberty was a gift of friendship from France to the United States. For many years it was one of the first glimpses of the U.S. for immigrants and visitors from around the world, and today it is known as a universal symbol of freedom and democracy. Included with a purchased ticket for the ferry ride to Liberty Island is access to Ellis Island. The Ellis Island Immigrant Museum is filled with exhibits including films, archives, and photos showing what coming to America meant for immigrants.
South Street Seaport
Once the busiest port in America, today the Seaport is one of New York City’s designated historic districts. You’ll find cobblestone streets lined with renovated original mercantile buildings, and even a few historical sailing vessels docked at the Seaport. Visitors can also enjoy shopping, nightlife, and restaurants in the mall at Pier 17. Stop by during weekends for street performers and concerts during summer.
